How Do We Build Communities That Promote Professional Growth?
We all learn about it in school: continuous professional development. Formalized & regulated processes like continuing education, licensure requirements, and the like ensure that clinicians at least go through the motions of keeping up to date with current research/evidence and best practice. But these measures only prod clinicians to tick boxes on a checklist, rather than truly promote continuous professional development. We all know those clinicians who “phone it in” every couple of years when it’s time for licensure renewal. They knock out 10 online courses in a week in order to meet the CEU requirements to renew. That type of “marathon” CEU course crunch doesn’t do anything except satisfy the requirements.
Well, my guest this week, Sarah Lyon, is attempting to tackle this issue for her clinical discipline (Occupational Therapy) through her platform The OT Potential Club. She has built a community of clinicians who regularly review, discuss, and strategize how to implement current evidence in the field of Occupational Therapy.
