How can technology remove barriers to patient engagement?

in my book BetterOutcomes: A Guide to Humanizing HealthcareI spend an entire chapter focusing on patient engagement. Namely, removing barriers to patient engagement throughout the various patient encounters within a course of care. Through both my research for the book and my clinical experience as a clinician treating patients with chronic pain, one thing became abundantly clear. Active treatment is more effective than passive treatment. So the question becomes how do we get patients to become actively engaged in their treatment? Can technology help improve clinical outcomes and patient engagement?

So, this week, I share some thoughts on patient engagement, technology, and how to remove barriers to patient engagement.
