What is patient engagement? How does it impact patient experience?
It seems that, over the last few years, “Patient Engagement” has become quite the buzzword. Everyone talks about it: healthcare consultants, healthcare marketers, “thought leaders” in the space. But the reality is that no one has a universal definition of what we call “patient engagement”.
As far as I am concerned, patient engagement relates to whether a patient is an active participant in their treatment, as opposed to a passive recipient. I’ve written about this issue in my article on doing telehealth right. But the basic idea is this: engaged patients take an active role in their treatment planning and treatment implementation. This may mean that they follow a clinician’s recommendations, participate during treatment, or complete their home exercise programs.
I recently had a chance to sit down with the folks over at The Power of The Patient to chat about this topic, about taking a biopsychosocial approach to healthcare, and how clinicians can fundamentally change their view of healthcare & service delivery in a way that maximizes patient engagement.

He also has experience as a core faculty member at Augusta University’s Occupational Therapy Program, as a Licensed Board Member on the GA State OT Board, and he serves on the Board of Directors for NBCOT. He works to help healthcare clinics and organizations deliver uniquely impactful patient experiences by improving service delivery through training & advisement and through courses & training programs.
